VALACICLOVIR - is an antiviral drug that has been used to manage and treat various herpes infections for more than 2 decades. It was initially approved by the FDA in 1995. Valacyclovir is the L-valine ester of aciclovir. It is a member of the purine (guanine) nucleoside analog drug class 9. The major use of valacyclovir is the treatment of genital herpes episodes or outbreaks. Genital herpes is a frequently diagnosed sexually transmitted disease which currently affects more than 400 million individuals worldwide. It is caused by infection with the herpes simplex virus (HSV). Infection with this virus is lifelong with periodic episodes of reactivation. Also valaciclovir forms an important part of regiment for the treatment of hepatitis, HIV and cytomegalovirus.

DESCRIPTION
Valaciclovir is known as a pro-drug. Once inside your body it is broken down into an active ingredient called aciclovir. It is used to treat infections caused by two common viruses - herpes zoster and herpes simplex. The herpes zoster virus is the cause of shingles. Herpes simplex viruses cause cold sores, and genital herpes. You will have been prescribed valaciclovir to treat (or prevent further episodes of) one of these infections.

PACKAGING
VALACICLOVIR comes in the form of tablets for oral use: 500 mg per tablet, 10 tablets per pack.

Active ingredient:
Valaciclovir - 500 mg.

Excipients:
Microcrystalline cellulose - 106.8 mg, povidone K25 - 12 mg, magnesium stearate - 5 mg. Shell composition: hypromellose - 11 mg, macrogol 4000 - 3 mg, titanium dioxide - 6 mg.

DOSAGE
Orally, before or after food, with water, without chewing.

Your dose will depend upon the type of infection you have, so take the tablets exactly as your doctor tells you to. Typically, doses range from 500 mg to 2 g, taken 1-4 times daily. Your doctor or pharmacist will tell you what dose is right for you, and this information will also be printed on the label of the pack to remind you about what the doctor said to you.
